San Francisco, April 11, 2006—Chanticleer, the internationally-acclaimed, 12-man vocal ensemble, closes the 2005-06 Bay Area season with La Guerre: Triumph and Tragedy of War, a program of 16th and 17th century works focused on the all-too-topical theme of battle. La Guerre will be performed six times in five striking venues in the Bay Area: Petaluma’s St. Vincent Church on May 19; San Francisco’s Mission Dolores on May 20 and June 4; Berkeley’s First Congregational Church on May 21; Carmel Mission on June 2 and San Jose’s Saint Joseph’s Cathedral Basilica on June 3. The June 4 concert is also the opening performance of the 2006 Berkeley Festival and Exhibition, dedicated to early music.
The “La Guerre” (“War”) program features Clément Janequin’s (c1490-1562) song, “La Guerre,” a programmatic piece about the Battle of Marignano, described by program note writer Ivan Moody: “In telling the story of a battle between French and Swiss troops, the chanson contains the sounds of cannon, muskets, swords and trumpets, ending with the Swiss vanquished and fleeing.” The program continues with mass settings based on the Janequin piece by Spanish Golden Age composers Francisco Guerrero (1528-1599) and Tomás Luis de Victoria (1548-1611). Also featured are works by Juan Gutiérrez de Padilla (c1590-1664), who was born in Spain and moved to the New World, where he was chapel master at the Cathedral of Puebla in Mexico.
Tickets ($25 - $42) are available through City Box Office (415-392-4400 or 800-407-1400) or online here. (See Calendar Listing, below.)
